Text Box: INGLESIDE FARM

Bathroom Renovations

When we first moved in, just about the only good thing about the house’s sole bathroom was that it was fairly spacious.  It had a tiny little sink with no counter space or storage, a filthy little medicine cabinet, ugly tiles, ugly walls, and a full-length window that gave a clear view from the back yard directly across to the toilet.  It also had no source of heat and had severe termite damage in the floor joists and exterior wall.

It did have a wonderful old cast iron bathtub that was still in excellent condition.  That tub was the only thing we kept.  The rest of the room was completely torn out and replaced, right down to and including the exterior wall and the floor joists.  While construction was going on we spent the winter with only a single sheet of plywood covering the exterior wall.  It was cold in there!

Text Box: This is what the bathroom looked like the day we came to look at the house to see if we wanted to buy it. When the home inspector came, these ugly bathroom tiles were the thing that got the highest marks out of the whole inspection!

Another picture of the  day we looked at the house to see if we wanted to buy it.  The bathroom walls were covered with the same “cabin” looking wood paneling as the kitchen ceiling and hallway.

Text Box: These pictures show how the bathroom looked for the first few months we lived here. Whose bright idea was it to put in full-height window looking from the back yard directly towards the toilet? Nobody wants that!
Text Box: An old bedspread tacked up over the window gives the bathroom a little privacy, and a sheet of plastic protects the sink while I try stripping the paint off the old medicine cabinet in an attempt to make it a place that I’m not actually afraid to have my toiletries touch.

In the end, we abandon both the sink and the medicine cabinet in favor of larger ones with more storage space.
Text Box: I actually kind of like these big old strap hinges, but they belong on a barn door or an antique trunk, not on my bathroom door.
Text Box: Unfinished walls, cheap shower stall, crappy shower curtain… and by some miracle, a very nice cast iron tub in excellent condition. It’s the only thing in the bathroom that we keep.
