Workshops

From sheep care to wool processing and fiber art, I offer private, custom workshops scheduled at your convenience and adaptable to focus on whatever skills you most want to learn.  See one of my products that you’d like to learn to make?  Contact me and let me design a workshop for you!

I hope someday to convert our old country store into a spacious workshop studio, but until we have that facility, I must limit my workshop size to individuals, couples, or small groups.

Here are examples of some of the beginner’s level workshops I offer:  Shearing (October only), Fiber Processing, Intro to Spinning, Intro to Felting, Needle Felting.  I also offer a very special 2-day Sheep Farm Adventure for two where you and a friend can join me and experience the shepherd’s life during lambing season in April.  See below for details.

October 2011

Shearing & Fiber Processing Workshops

Are you a spinner or knitter who has watched “sheep to shawl” competitions and dreamed of one day spinning yarn or knitting a sweater from wool you sheared yourself?

Are you a historical reenactor who yearns for the experience of creating authentic woolen items starting at the very first step?

Are you a shepherd who would like to learn a gentle method of shearing that doesn’t require the physical prowess of flipping the sheep upside down?

Then you’ll love our “shearing for beginners” workshop!  You’ll get to:

· Choose your fleece “on the hoof” from our beautiful flock.

· Learn a beginner-friendly method of shearing.  I’ll teach you how to shear your chosen sheep in a shearing stand, rather than using the Australian method of wrestling them around and flipping them upside down.  Our way is slower, but it’s gentler to the sheep and to our backs!

· Learn how to skirt your fleece and prepare it for use.

For even more hands-on fiber fun, try our full-day Fiber-Processing workshop.  In addition to shearing a sheep, you’ll get an introduction to all the steps of processing a fleece, including:

· Shearing

· Skirting

· Washing

· Drying

· Picking

· Carding

· Basic Spinning

· Basic Felting

I’m accepting a limited number of appointments for the month of October 2010.  First come, first choice of fleece, so contact me early  to schedule yours.  Questions?  Just ask!

Prices:

Shearing Workshop:  $50 (includes the fleece for you to take home).

Fiber Processing Workshop: $100 (includes a full day of fiber-processing instruction:  shearing, skirting, washing, carding, intro to spinning, intro to felting).
